Ellen’s life and career have been spent building community, promoting public health, and nurturing everyone around her. She worked in many capacities as a registered nurse over the years, including eight years as a nurse practitioner with breast cancer patients in the Roanoke Valley. She rounded out her career as an assistant professor at Jefferson College of Health Sciences and then Radford University Carilion where she found great joy in teaching the nurses of tomorrow.
A lifelong learner herself, Ellen always nurtured students, friends, patients, and family through feeding their curiosity, meeting everyone where they are, and explaining concepts in down-to-earth ways that everyone can understand. She taught by example and through relationships.
For all of these reasons, there is no better way to honor Ellen’s life and career than through a scholarship to support future nurses who share these values and gifts. The Ellen DeHaven Nursing Scholarship will support Radford University Carilion students in their senior year who have demonstrated leadership, a commitment to community and others, and who value diversity, equity, and inclusion. The scholarship recipients will be selected by the RUC faculty, of which Ellen was an integral part.
